Good feedback can help a leader reach the next level, and it takes strength and character to receive it and apply it. Take a look at ways to take feedback and use it to improve your role.

If you receive feedback from several different sources at the same time, you can break it down into pieces and consider it one thing at a time. This will help you understand it and apply it so that you can benefit. This will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed.

If you want to make changes based on feedback, you should take your time making the changes. Moving too quickly is artificial, and it is unlikely to last. Learning how to listen has many benefits, from actually understanding what someone is telling you to understanding their motives. Listening is more than hearing the words; it’s showing the person that you value what they have to say. When you are an active listener, you will have follow up questions to show that you are trying to understand their perspective. This makes them feel confident in speaking their mind to you.

Many people react to feedback by becoming defensive. It is a built in habit for many, and it sends the conversation in the wrong direction. Try to control this reaction and listen instead. Let the person finish what they are saying, and think before you respond. It can be difficult to learn how to listen, but it will serve you well. 

  1. Pay Attention to Your Body Language

Your body language communicates with those around you, and it is important to pay attention to it. You want to appear open and receptive rather than defensive or closed. When you cross your arms or legs, it appears defensive and reinforces this reaction. Have good posture and make eye contact as you keep your breathing regular and slow.
